Rose Gold, A Photo Diary

As you guys know, my brother got married late last year and since then, Iโ€ve been meaning to get this photo diary published- a beautiful rose gold cacophony of colour. Rose gold has quite a different symbolic relevance when compared to that of Gold. Deliberately adulterated, it is gold that has an playfulness to be something else. Rose gold is rebellious in a sense. The desire it stimulates is that of luxury and decadence. It is gold for people who already have enough gold gold โ€“ and yes, I mean even that of the heart kind ๐Ÿ˜‰

Plate used for performative ritual through which a bride is welcomed to her new marital home. Itโ€™s underlying symbolic significance has a few cultural references:

1. Throwing of rice at a newly wed couple is a long-held symbol of good luck, abundance and fertility.

2. Betel leaves/coconuts are given as offerings and betel nut is thrown at four corners of the marital home to cast away the evil eye.

3. At the beginning of any auspicious task/occasion, coconuts are smashed to symbolize the removal of negative energies/obstacles.

4. Lighting an oil lamp is symbolic of the cosmic fire or divine light/Noor.

5. Red powder. Itโ€™s pigmented stain; symbolizing commitment and vows.

6. Sweetmeats/Sweets; a gentle reminder, that may only sweet words resound.

Happily Ever After.
